But the mechanics of why speed matters go beyond a single algorithm checkbox.

Core Web Vitals are the specific metrics Google measures: Largest Contentful Paint (how long the main content takes to become visible), Interaction to Next Paint (how responsive the page feels when a user clicks or taps something), and Cumulative Layout Shift (how much the page visually jumps around as it loads). Poor scores on any of these can hold a page back in rankings even if its content and backlinks are otherwise strong.

Beyond the direct ranking signal, speed affects the metrics that indirectly influence SEO. A slow page increases bounce rate — visitors leaving before the content even loads — which signals to Google that the page failed to satisfy the search intent that brought someone there. It also reduces average session duration and pages-per-session, both of which correlate with content quality in ways Google's ranking systems are built to detect.

Mobile makes this more urgent, not less. The majority of searches now happen on mobile devices, often on inconsistent network connections, where the gap between a fast and slow site is felt even more acutely than on desktop. Google's mobile-first indexing means your mobile page speed, specifically, is what gets evaluated for ranking purposes — a fast desktop site with a slow mobile version doesn't get credit for the desktop speed.
